Renesas Electronics, one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers, has restored its pre-earthquake production capacity following a phased restart of its facilities in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture. The July 28, 2026 earthquake caused structural damage at Renesas facilities, including wall cracks and water leakage at the Kawashiri wafer fabrication plant. The Nishiki facility resumed operations within roughly 24 hours, while Kawashiri is scheduled for a partial restart on August 5 with a target of returning to full capacity within three weeks. As a dominant supplier of microcontrollers and analog chips for the automotive sector, Renesas provides essential components to Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. The Kumamoto region has become a strategic semiconductor hub, attracting major investments including a major TSMC fabrication facility.
