Apple briefly crosses $5 trillion market cap as Wall Street rewards spending discipline over AI hype

Apple briefly crossed the $5 trillion market capitalization milestone on July 28, becoming only the second publicly traded company to reach that level. Shares peaked at $342.89 during the session, a 1.8% intraday gain, before closing around $4.98 to $4.99 trillion. The stock has risen nearly 60% over the past 12 months and approximately 24-25% year-to-date, driven by strong iPhone demand and continued growth in the services segment. This performance allowed Apple to reclaim its position as the world’s most valuable company from Nvidia, the only other member of the $5 trillion club, in a market environment increasingly favoring durable cash flows over capital-intensive AI investments.
