FIFA’s privatization crisis deepens as senior advisor resigns over Infantino’s World Cup stake sale

FIFA president Gianni Infantino plans to create a private company to manage commercial rights for FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, allowing private investors to purchase stakes. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior FIFA advisor for five years, resigned on July 31, 2026, stating the proposed stake sale would be detrimental to FIFA’s Member Associations and the long-term future of the sport. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, co-host of the 2030 World Cup, called the plan « outrageous » and said Infantino was « the wrong man to lead the organization ». UEFA has also opposed these plans, stating they crossed a critical line for football’s governing institutions.
