Federal regulators approved Amazon’s autonomous Zoox vehicles to charge customers for rides in cars without steering wheels or brake pedals. Zoox, acquired by Amazon for $1.2 billion, can deploy up to 2,500 vehicles without manual controls over two years and aims to produce 10,000 robotaxis annually at a plant near Silicon Valley. Waymo, owned by Alphabet, currently leads the industry, while Amazon works to catch up. Over 500,000 people have already ridden in Zoox vehicles in Las Vegas and San Francisco. Safety groups raised concerns about the lack of detailed evidence proving these vehicles can operate safely on public roads.
