Anthropic says Claude found new weaknesses in cryptographic algorithms

Share

Anthropic announced that its Claude Mythos Preview model discovered improved attacks against two cryptographic algorithms, though these results do not affect currently deployed systems. Regarding HAWK, a post-quantum digital signature scheme under evaluation by NIST, the key recovery cost for the smallest HAWK 256 configuration dropped from 2 to the power of 64 to 2 to the power of 38 operations, effectively halving the scheme’s key strength. For AES 128, Claude improved a meet-in-the-middle attack against the seven-round version using a method called Möbius Bridge, making the attack between 200 and 800 times faster than previous methods. Developing these attacks required approximately 60 hours using a multi-agent research system with an estimated cost of 100,000 dollars in API usage.
