Anthropic’s frontier AI model, Claude Mythos Preview, has discovered novel attacks against weakened versions of the AES algorithm, making cryptanalysis 200 to 1,000 times faster. The model also developed an improved attack against HAWK, a post-quantum cryptographic signature scheme. Bitcoin currently relies on ECDSA to authorize transactions, and developers are already working on migrating to lattice-based post-quantum signature schemes. Researchers clarify that no immediate threat exists to Bitcoin or current encryption systems, as the attacks targeted deliberately weakened systems used for research purposes.
