Quantum routing for logistics is promising but the 12-20% fuel savings claim needs context

FedEx and DHL are exploring quantum computing to optimize truck routing for delivery fleets. However, no large-scale deployment has confirmed the 12-20% fuel savings figures often cited in industry discussions. FedEx’s quantum initiatives have focused on warehouse layout optimization without publishing specific fuel savings data. DHL’s most notable pilot with Groovenauts and Honeywell achieved an estimated 60% reduction in carbon emissions, but carbon reduction is not equivalent to fuel savings. In contrast, FedEx’s classical computer-based dynamic routing already delivers 10-15% fuel and labor cost reductions. Neither FedEx nor DHL integrate blockchain or cryptocurrency into their quantum logistics projects.
