Zcash cofounder Bryce Wilcox-O’Hearn (Zooko) revealed that Zcash distributed over $8 million in retroactive grants, including $1.5 million to researcher Taylor Hornby who discovered and disclosed the Orchard bug. This vulnerability, detected using Anthropic’s AI model, could have allowed an attacker to create an unlimited number of counterfeit ZEC tokens. The Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3) was activated on July 28, 2026 to fix this four-year-old counterfeiting bug. Zooko highlighted that Zcash once again proved it is a sustainable, capture-resistant, and evolving system of self-funding and self-governance.
