ZachXBT, an independent cryptocurrency investigator, infiltrated a Chinese syndicate specializing in laundering funds stolen during the Bybit hack. The investigator fronted 349,700 USDC by posing as a client to a broker who revealed in advance where North Korea’s stolen funds were going next. He lost 5% on every transaction made with this criminal network. This operation enabled him to gather information on the laundering mechanisms used by North Korea-affiliated groups.
