XRP Ledger developers released an emergency security patch on September 25 after discovering a critical vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to create approximately 18.5 trillion spendable XRP, far exceeding the network’s original 100 billion supply. The bug was confirmed on September 22, and the fix was merged the following day, included in xrpld version 3.4.1. Given the flaw’s severity, developers bypassed the standard amendment process, which normally requires validators to vote on protocol changes over several weeks. Over 80% of validators had been upgraded by September 25. No evidence of exploitation on a public network was found, though the theoretical exposure was estimated at approximately $94 billion.
