Witsand, a coastal village of approximately 600 residents on South Africa’s Garden Route, now has 45 businesses accepting Bitcoin for everyday purchases. The initiative, led by local programmer Edwin Jones and restaurant owner Eldry Hill, grew from just three merchants to 45 establishments between 2023 and April 2025. The system offers guaranteed fiat exchange rates, removing volatility risk for merchants and facilitating Bitcoin-denominated loans within the community. With roughly one Bitcoin-accepting business for every 13 residents, Witsand has become a notable grassroots Bitcoin experiment.
