McDonald’s announced plans to create its own media network, following in the footsteps of retail giants like Amazon and Walmart. In August, 450 company-owned U.S. restaurants began displaying advertising from other companies on their digital drive-thru order boards as part of a pilot program that has not yet expanded to the franchisees operating the rest of its roughly 14,000 U.S. locations. The fast-food chain hopes this venture could grow into a $1 billion business. The commerce media market is projected to exceed $100 billion in the U.S. alone by 2028, and McDonald’s is uniquely positioned to capitalize, serving approximately 85% of the U.S. population at least once per year.
