Why DeFi giant Aave is pulling the plug on six hyped blockchains making less than $5,000 a quarter

Aave, through its risk service provider LlamaRisk, has proposed winding down its V3 deployments on six blockchains: Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos. The proposal covers $4.1 million in outstanding debt and $12.8 million supplied across 25 lending reserves. These six chains generate minimal quarterly revenue: under $5,000 for Sonic, Scroll, and zkSync, and under $1,000 for Metis, Soneium, and Aptos. The first step would freeze all reserves, cap supply and borrow at 1, and redirect nearly 99% of interest to Aave’s treasury to encourage user withdrawals. Existing positions would remain open initially, but rate adjustments, liquidation threshold changes, and oracle modifications could follow in later stages.
