Westinghouse files for IPO nine years after bankruptcy, signaling nuclear energy’s comeback

Westinghouse Electric Company has confidentially filed a draft registration statement with the SEC for a proposed initial public offering on July 31. The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2017 after massive cost overruns on its AP1000 reactor projects, was acquired by Brookfield and Cameco for approximately $8 billion in late 2023. A potential valuation of $30 billion or more by January 2029 would represent nearly a 4x return for the acquirers. This IPO comes as AI data center power demand creates unexpected opportunities for the nuclear sector, bridging to crypto mining. The US government, Brookfield, and Cameco committed in October 2025 to invest at least $80 billion toward new reactor deployments.
