Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, has partnered with Japanese ride-hailing platform GO Inc. and taxi operator Nihon Kotsu to launch Japan’s first fully autonomous commercial robotaxi service, with a targeted launch in 2027. The initial fleet will consist of approximately 100 Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology, operating without any safety drivers. Testing conducted across seven Tokyo wards since 2025 has paved the way for the commercial rollout, pending final approval from Japanese transport authorities. GO shares surged 9.7% following the announcement, signaling investor confidence in the venture’s commercial potential. The Tokyo project marks Waymo’s first international commercial endeavor, with additional launches planned for cities such as London and Munich.
