US stocks and cryptocurrencies enter September facing their weakest month on record. The S&P 500 closed August with gains of more than 2% and reached a record high of 7,798.99 on August 13, its 27th record close of 2026. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has historically lost an average of 0.8% in September since 1950, while the S&P 500 shows an average September loss of 1.17% according to Bank of America data going back to 1928. Bitcoin has averaged a 2.87% September decline since 2013, while Ethereum has experienced an average September drop of 9.40% since 2015, making it the weakest month for both assets. Several pressures are now building: personal consumption expenditures inflation reached 3.7% in July, conflict between the United States and Iran has resumed, and midterm elections are approaching, historically associated with increased volatility in September and October.
