Vitol acquires 600 MW South Carolina data center from Meridian Gridworks in commodity trader’s AI infrastructure push

Vitol, the world’s largest independent energy trader, has acquired a 600 MW data center campus in South Carolina from Meridian Gridworks through its renewables arm VC Renewables. The deal, disclosed in mid-August 2026, marks one of the first times a major commodity trader has entered the AI infrastructure space directly. The 600 MW capacity is enough to power roughly 450,000 US homes. Meridian Gridworks, founded in 2025, will continue to oversee the campus development. This acquisition transforms Vitol from a data center service provider into an owner-operator of the underlying infrastructure, leveraging its existing energy trading capabilities.
