The United States ordered federal agencies to remove DeepSeek technology from their IT systems and extended the restriction to software and services developed by other companies using the Chinese company’s AI models. The Department of Homeland Security published the directive on October 20, citing national security concerns about DeepSeek’s Chinese operations, including the risk that sensitive data could be transmitted to servers in China. DeepSeek responded by open-sourcing DeepInfer, its inference framework, along with deepseek-recipe, a collection of software components allowing developers to replicate the company’s API behavior and deploy its models independently. This initiative aims to expand global adoption of its technology despite US restrictions, which nonetheless threaten its adoption among federal contractors and technology suppliers.
