The US Department of Homeland Security ordered civilian federal agencies on October 19, 2026, to stop using DeepSeek products, citing national security risks. The directive cites unauthorized transfer of sensitive data to China, intelligence gathering on US persons, and potential malware introduction through DeepSeek’s models. Agencies must comply immediately with the order published in the Federal Register on October 20, 2026. The measure is limited to civilian agencies and does not yet include broader export controls or DeepSeek’s addition to the Commerce Department’s Entity List. Founded in July 2023, DeepSeek gained widespread attention in early 2025 with the release of its R1 model, triggering increased scrutiny from US authorities.
