US economy enters 74-month expansion, surpassing historical average

The US economy has now been expanding for 74 consecutive months, officially surpassing the average postwar expansion length of roughly 64 to 65 months. The NBER confirmed that the pandemic recession lasted just two months, making it the shortest in history. Projected GDP growth for 2026 stands at around 2.2%, while recession probabilities hover near 30%. To match the historical record of 128 months, the current expansion would need to continue until mid-2031.
