US and Iran exchange significant attacks amid escalating tensions near Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran exchanged their most significant military strikes in months on September 1, with US airstrikes targeting IRGC sites near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran retaliating with ballistic missiles. The US strikes reportedly killed at least five civilians and injured between 50 and 68 people at a wedding near Sirik. Iran launched 13 ballistic missiles toward Jordan, most of which were intercepted by American defense systems. This escalation ends a month-long pause in hostilities, with the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, remaining at the center of the tensions.
