The United States and Canada are engaged in tense negotiations over auto tariffs, with Washington proposing to reduce its 25% levy on Canadian-made vehicles and parts to 15%. Ottawa considers this offer insufficient, given the razor-thin margins already characteristic of the auto industry. If no deal is reached before August 19, 2026, new 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including automobiles, are set to take effect. The proposed 7.5% rate for vehicles with high US content would incentivize manufacturers to shift production inputs to the United States, at the expense of Canadian industry. The negotiations also cover dairy supply management, alcohol sales restrictions and steel and aluminum tariffs within the broader framework of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
