The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill posted returns exceeding 30% for the fiscal year ending June 2026, making it one of the top-performing endowments in the United States. This exceptional performance stems from an early investment in SpaceX made through Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund more than 15 years ago, which grew to represent roughly 10% of the UNC system’s assets. Before SpaceX’s IPO on June 12, 2026, UNCMC sold approximately $1 billion in shares while retaining over $1 billion post-listing. Chapel Hill’s endowment accounts for nearly half of the nearly $15 billion in total assets managed by the UNC system as of March 31, 2026.
