The United States holds 328,372 BTC, worth approximately $25 billion, making it the largest sovereign Bitcoin holder in the world. These holdings represent roughly 1.5% of Bitcoin’s total supply and came exclusively from criminal asset forfeitures, including the Silk Road marketplace and the Bitfinex hack. On March 6, 2025, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14233, officially establishing a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and prohibiting any sale of the coins. Two bills, the BITCOIN Act and ARMA, are pending in Congress to make the reserve permanent and potentially expand US holdings to up to 1 million BTC.
