On October 8 and 9, 2026, Ukraine struck two Yandex data centres, the Russian tech giant often described as “Russia’s Google.” The Sasovo facility, which housed two supercomputers used for training YandexGPT, the company’s AI model, was completely shut down. The Kaluga site, southwest of Moscow, suffered partial damage with several modules disabled. Ukrainian drone manufacturer Firepoint confirmed its involvement in the Kaluga attack. These strikes caused temporary outages for Yandex Cloud services, affecting major clients such as Russian Railways and MegaFon, while Yandex shares fell approximately 4% on the Moscow Exchange.
