U.S. auto safety regulator opens probe into nearly 1,000 Tesla Cybercabs

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an audit into approximately 1,000 Tesla Cybercab vehicles to examine the process and technical data the EV maker used to certify compliance with federal vehicle safety standards. The investigation comes after Tesla launched the commercial deployment of a small number of these two-seater vehicles in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. NHTSA noted that the Cybercab lacks permanently attached conventional manual controls, including a steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator pedal, and mirrors. According to state records, Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered in Texas as of Friday morning, including 45 Cybercab vehicles.
