Turkey calls for reopening of Strait of Hormuz to resume global oil flows

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, closed to commercial traffic since late February 2026. This strategic passage between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula handles 20 to 25 percent of global seaborne oil trade and roughly 20 percent of liquefied natural gas shipments. Iran has made compensation for damages caused by US and Israeli military strikes a condition for reopening, creating a lasting diplomatic impasse. Meanwhile, Turkey and Iraq signed an agreement in August 2026 to restore the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline with a capacity of 750,000 barrels per day, offering an alternative route to shipments transiting the strait.
