Trump’s first term had real stimulus checks. His second has promised ones tied to problems he started

At the GOP midterm convention in Dallas, Donald Trump pledged $5,000 to every American if Republicans hold Congress in November, calling it the « Trump Dividend » and costing more than $1 trillion. This contrasts with his first-term stimulus checks, designed to address the Covid-19 pandemic: $1,200 per adult and $500 per child in March 2020, then $600 in December, totaling more than $814 billion. Trump’s second term is marked by unfulfilled promises: the « DOGE dividend » of $5,000 per household never materialized despite DOGE’s shutdown on July 4, 2025, and the $2,000 « tariff rebate » has only a 1% to 2% chance of happening. Tax promises (eliminating taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits) have only been partially implemented, with temporary deductions through 2028, costing an estimated $3.6 trillion to $6.6 trillion in added deficits over a decade.
