Trump threatens new tariffs on Canadian vehicles after trade talks collapse

The United States imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian imports worth $20 to $28 billion on August 22, 2026. Ottawa responded by announcing dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on steel, agriculture, and electronics, effective September 8. Trade negotiations, launched in July 2026, collapsed over a disagreement on medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Prime Minister Mark Carney decided to halt discussions permanently and denounced Washington’s inflexibility.
