President Donald Trump publicly ruled out the use of nuclear weapons against Iran, stating that a nuclear weapon should never be used by anybody. He claimed that US strikes had decimated Iranian forces without needing to escalate to the world’s most destructive weapon class. On April 23, sixteen days after issuing a warning to Iran, Trump indicated that the US could neutralize any reconstituted capability within a single day. A US-Israel coalition is currently negotiating a temporary ceasefire with Iran, though international estimates had established that Tehran was not close to developing a bomb prior to recent escalations. As of August 2026, negotiations have not yet yielded a permanent resolution.
