Top Democrat criticizes Trump administration for worsening chip shortage

A leading Democrat criticized the Trump administration for its handling of semiconductor policy, which he says is worsening the chip shortage in the United States. The CHIPS Act of 2022 allocated roughly $39 billion to boost US chip manufacturing, with America’s global production share falling from 37% in 1990 to just 10% by 2022. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra stated in June 2026 that there is no line of sight for AI memory chip supply to meet demand, projecting shortages extending beyond 2027. Bitcoin miners were severely impacted during the 2020-2023 shortage cycle, with hardware premiums spiking and squeezing margins already thinned by the April 2024 halving. Publicly traded miners including Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms, and CleanSpark have heavily invested in fleet expansion despite growing policy uncertainty.
