Tokenized Stocks Show Real Demand But Remain Volatile and Illiquid, IMF Finds

The IMF’s latest Global Financial Stability Report reveals that more than 50% of tokenized stock trading occurs outside regular U.S. market hours, with approximately 80% of trades involving less than a full share. Traditional stocks absorbed between 87% and 99% of overnight price moves from their tokenized counterparts when markets reopened. Tokenized equities exhibit roughly 1.5 times the volatility of underlying stocks and significantly lower liquidity. The market, valued at approximately $2.3 billion, remains small and concentrated, with Ondo Finance and Backed Finance controlling over 70% of this segment.
