The challenge for AI agents is deciding who pays for automated errors

AI agents are increasingly completing purchases rather than just recommending them, raising questions about permissions and responsibility when transactions go wrong. Mastercard forecasts that one in ten people will routinely use AI agents to shop and pay by 2030. Both card networks and cryptocurrency companies are developing their own systems to manage automated payments, with mechanisms for spending limits and transaction tracking. The unresolved challenge remains proving what the user authorized and recovering funds without forcing customers to supervise every software decision. Technical solutions like signed mandates and spending limits exist, but they cannot substitute for a clear understanding of the task being performed.
