On October 28, 2026, Thailand’s Supreme Court ruled in case 4929/2569 that Bitcoin constitutes property under Sections 137 and 138 of the Civil and Commercial Code. Five foreign nationals convicted of assaulting a victim on Koh Samui and forcing the victim to transfer 2.480801 BTC, then valued at approximately $50,000, or 1.878 million baht, received 10-year prison sentences. The defendants must return the stolen Bitcoin or pay an equivalent cash restitution. This binding decision confirms that Bitcoin is protected as property without being recognized as legal tender, and builds on a 2025 ruling that already classified it as movable property.
