Tether posts $1.5B Q2 profit as reserve buffer halves to $4.11B

Share

Tether published its Q2 2026 attestation on July 31, reporting roughly $1.5 billion in net operating profit, driven by yields on its US Treasury bill portfolio and repo operations. The report also revealed that the reserve buffer was halved in a single quarter, falling from $8.23 billion to $4.11 billion, raising questions about the model’s resilience amid volatile market conditions.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key Takeaways

  • Q2 2026 operating profit of ~$1.5B, up versus Q1
  • Reserve buffer halved from $8.23B to $4.11B in three months
  • Gold reserves lifted to 146.2 metric tons (+14 tons in the quarter)
  • Bitcoin holdings expanded to 98,933 BTC despite a price drop to $58,600
  • USDT supply reached $184.6B with market share above 60%

Strong profit, weakened buffer

BDO’s attestation details, as of June 30, 2026, $187.75 billion in total assets against $183.64 billion in liabilities. The reserve surplus โ€” which serves as a safety cushion for USDT holders โ€” stands at $4.11 billion, or roughly 2.2% of the stablecoin’s circulating supply. This is sharply below the $8.23 billion recorded at the end of Q1, a drop of nearly 50% in just three months.

According to PrimeXBT’s analysis, the contraction is primarily driven by unrealized losses on reserve assets and capital deployments. Given the reported profit, the buffer should have mechanically reached approximately $9.7 billion; instead, roughly $5.6 billion left the balance sheet through these two channels.

“USDT has remained fully backed by our reserves, which continue to exceed liabilities by $4.11 billion.”

Gold stockpile expands despite price drop

Tether raised its physical gold reserves to approximately 146.2 metric tons, up from 132.2 tons three months earlier. The addition of 14 tons during the second quarter exceeds the 6 tons acquired in Q1 and confirms a sustained accumulation policy. With this stock, the issuer now ranks as the largest known gold holder outside central banks and sovereign states.

The valuation of these holdings nonetheless declined, from $19.84 billion to $18.84 billion. The drop mirrors a roughly 15% decline in the gold price during the quarter, which fell to just over $4,000 per ounce as rising bond yields โ€” fueled by the Middle East conflict โ€” weighed on the non-yielding metal.

“The Middle East conflict pushed bond yields higher, creating unfavorable conditions for a metal that pays no yield.”

Bitcoin: accumulation and unrealized losses

Tether increased its bitcoin stockpile from 97,137 BTC to 98,933 BTC, an addition of roughly 1,796 coins during the quarter. The valuation of these holdings nevertheless dropped from $6.62 billion to $5.80 billion. The bitcoin price used in the attestation fell from $68,200 to $58,600, absorbing the positive effect of the higher coin count.

Combined unrealized losses on gold and bitcoin are estimated at roughly $1.8 billion, which explains most of the gap between the headline operating profit and the contraction of the reserve cushion.

USDT grows despite a shrinking stablecoin market

USDT’s circulating supply reached approximately $184.6 billion at the end of June, up by roughly $446 million versus the close of Q1. This growth came as the total stablecoin market cap contracted, allowing Tether to push its market share above 60%.

According to DefiLlama, USDT circulates primarily on two blockchains: Tron with $89.75 billion and Ethereum with $74.79 billion. Tether also reports the addition of more than 30 million new users during the quarter, a sign of continued adoption despite the bearish backdrop for crypto assets.

Reserve simplification and regulatory backdrop

Tether trimmed its exposure to secured lending by approximately $2.38 billion, a 15% decline from the previous quarter. The move is part of a stated strategy to simplify the reserve structure and improve liquidity. Reserves remain primarily composed of short-term US government-backed instruments, Treasury bills, cash equivalents, and repo operations.

These results come against a tense regulatory backdrop. The GENIUS Act could reshape the US stablecoin market by 2028, imposing new constraints on foreign issuers. Meanwhile, the full audit commissioned from KPMG in March 2026 has yet to be completed five months later: the Q2 attestation was again prepared by BDO, not a Big Four firm, limiting the reach of Tether’s financial transparency.

Conclusion

Q2 2026 confirms Tether’s ability to generate massive profits through its exposure to US Treasuries, but also exposes a vulnerability: the reserve buffer shrank by half in a single quarter, dragged down by unrealized losses on gold and bitcoin combined with capital deployments. While the 1:1 backing remains formally guaranteed, the safety margin is approaching historically low levels. Coming quarters will show whether Tether rebuilds its cushion or continues an aggressive balance-sheet expansion ahead of upcoming US regulatory deadlines.
