A report reveals that a breach involving just two cryptographic keys could give attackers effective control over $91 billion in USDT, approximately half of the total supply of the world’s largest stablecoin. USDT circulation exceeds $180 billion, and experts warn that quantum computing poses a threat with a 50% probability that such attacks could become feasible by 2028. Tether has coordinated freezes totaling over $4.2 billion linked to illicit activities and completed a full KPMG audit in August 2026. A breach would allow unauthorized creation of unbacked USDT, destroying confidence and potentially triggering a market-wide liquidity crisis similar to the 2022 TerraUSD collapse that erased approximately $40 billion in value.
