Nevada regulators have authorized Tesla to operate up to 5,000 autonomous vehicles in Clark County, far exceeding the 1,000-vehicle permits granted to both Waymo and Uber. This approval, granted on August 20, 2026 by the Nevada Transportation Authority, marks a major step up from the previous restriction of just 10 vehicles confined to a narrow Las Vegas Strip corridor. Tesla shares climbed more than 5% on August 21, the day after the announcement. The service is expected to launch within 30 days, initially using Model Y vehicles before gradually introducing the Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi unveiled in October 2024. The approval positions Tesla as a major player in the Las Vegas autonomous vehicle market.
