South Korea is considering a fourth postponement of its 22 % tax on cryptocurrency gains, with implementation potentially delayed from January 1, 2027 to 2029. MP Park Min-gyu has introduced a bill tying the tax to the first international data exchange under the OECD’s CARF framework, expected in 2027. The 22 % rate (20 % national plus 2 % local tax) would apply to annual gains exceeding 2.5 million won, equivalent to less than 2,000 euros. The government met on Tuesday October 20 with representatives of South Korea’s five major platforms — Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX and Gopax — to discuss the timeline and fiscal treatment of airdrops, staking and DeFi. Without a parliamentary vote, January 1, 2027 remains the legally binding date.
