Singapore police received at least two reports of tampered Ledger hardware wallets as early as September 10, with combined losses of about 3.5 million Singapore dollars, or $2.7 million. Preliminary investigations found malicious hardware components in devices purchased from some retail stores in Singapore. The incident became public on October 9 after reports of devices sold through CryptoBilis, an authorized Ledger reseller in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès later said a Ledger Flex purchased at Singapore’s airport contained a spy implant, while another user reported a tampered device bought from local retailer Challenger. On October 13, Ledger asked retailers across eight countries and territories to suspend sales of its devices while investigations continue.
