Syria has told the United States it is ready to significantly reduce its purchases of Russian crude oil in an effort to obtain relief from US sanctions, including removal from the state sponsor of terrorism list. In 2025, Russia supplied Syria with 16.8 million barrels, approximately 46,000 barrels per day, a figure that rose to 60,000 barrels per day in 2026. This energy dependence on Moscow was built under the Assad regime, which has now been ousted from power. If the United States decides to remove Syria from the state sponsor of terrorism list, this would open access to Western financial markets, the international banking system, and trade relationships with the West.
