The Supreme Court on Monday rejected President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to overturn a federal civil jury’s verdict finding him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. The decision, made without explanation, upholds the $5 million in damages awarded to Carroll, who received more than $5.6 million last month including post-judgment interest. Trump has also asked the Supreme Court to overturn a separate $83.3 million defamation verdict, on which the high court has not yet ruled. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s at a Manhattan department store and then defaming her in 2019. Trump’s lawyers argue that statements he made while president should be protected by presidential immunity.
