Stripe is acquiring OpenRouter, the New York-based startup specializing in AI model API aggregation, for over $7 billion. This valuation represents a more than 500% increase from the $1.3 billion valuation achieved during the Series B round in May 2026. OpenRouter enables developers to access over 500 models from more than 80 providers through a single API, eliminating the need for separate integrations with each provider. The platform serves more than 8 million active developers and processes approximately 1.5 quadrillion tokens annually. Founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah, previously co-founder of OpenSea, OpenRouter offers intelligent routing that automatically directs requests to the optimal model based on cost, latency, and performance. This acquisition underscores Stripe’s intent to integrate an AI infrastructure layer within its payments ecosystem.
