Starknet is considering transforming into a standalone Layer 1 blockchain to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with a target set for 2027, ahead of Ethereum’s planned timeline for the end of 2029. This migration would allow Starknet to take full control of its security upgrades, specifically by moving away from elliptic curve cryptography used in its bridge with Ethereum and KZG commitments vulnerable to quantum computers. The network already employs zero-knowledge STARK proofs based on hash-based cryptography and has a roadmap for post-quantum security. This proposal emerges amid growing concerns about advances in AI-assisted mathematics and their implications for existing cryptographic systems.
