The SPUR coalition announced on October 12, 2026 the addition of over 40 new members, bringing its total to more than 80 organizations across more than 20 countries. Among the new members are The New York Times, The Economist, and Agence France-Presse. This coalition, launched in February 2026, aims to get AI companies to license news content instead of using it for free. At the same time, SPUR finalized its Content Telemetry Standard on October 2, 2026, allowing publishers to track how AI systems retrieve and cite their articles. The context for this mobilization is marked by a 33% drop in Google organic traffic to more than 2,500 news sites between November 2024 and November 2025.
