South Korea plans multibillion-dollar investment in AI infrastructure, with ripple effects for crypto

South Korea unveiled plans on June 29 to invest over $1 trillion in AI infrastructure, anchored by Samsung and SK Hynix committing to build four new chip fabrication plants. The semiconductor commitment alone amounts to approximately 800 trillion won ($518 billion), aiming to double South Korea’s national DRAM production by around 2031. South Korea’s GDP growth forecast has been revised upward to 3.0% for July 2026, driven largely by anticipated benefits from the AI chip boom. The country also plans a 2027 pilot for tokenizing government bonds aligned with the Bank of Korea’s Central Bank Digital Currency framework.
