South Korea Arrests Four Over Crypto Payments to Syrian Terror Group

South Korean police arrested four Uzbek nationals for financing terrorism via cryptocurrency transfers to Katibat Tawhid wal Jihad, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations and the United States. The alleged ringleader sent 4,267 USDT across seven transfers between August 2024 and April 2025, and received funds from the group to purchase and export to Syria vehicles and construction equipment worth a combined 170 million won, or 121,000 US dollars. One of the suspects was wanted on an Interpol Red Notice. Police say this is the first documented case of cryptocurrency flowing out of a designated terrorist group and returning as physical goods. The main suspect arrived in South Korea in 2017 on a student visa and had been living in the country as an overstayer since 2023.
