First National Bank launched a cryptocurrency trading service within its mobile app in South Africa on October 6, 2026, granting nearly 9 million clients access to five digital assets: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and USDT, with a minimum investment of 10 rands (approximately $0.60). The service, operated through local partner VALR, is strictly ringfenced: funds flow from FNB accounts but cryptos cannot be transferred in or out of the bank’s ecosystem. This closed model reflects a conservative approach to South African exchange controls within an evolving regulatory framework. FNB follows in the footsteps of Discovery Bank, which partnered with Luno in December 2025.
