Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade is scheduled for activation on October 21, 2026, at the start of epoch 1064, with the goal of reducing finality from 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. It will replace the TowerBFT voting mechanism with Votor, which collects validators’ votes off-chain and bundles them using BLS signatures. Block production time is also expected to fall to around 200 milliseconds, while the transaction execution layer will remain unchanged. Tests recorded median finality as low as 54 milliseconds, and validators will need to run an Agave client, at least version 4.3.2, and pay a 0.8 SOL fee per epoch.
