SK Hynix weighs Japan memory fab partnership to support AI boom

SK Hynix is considering building a major memory fabrication facility in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with potential investments reaching tens of trillions of won. The plant would produce high-bandwidth memory and NAND chips for AI workloads. Japan is aggressively courting semiconductor manufacturers with generous financial incentives as part of its strategy to rebuild domestic chip production capacity. SK Hynix currently commands between 50% and 60% of the global HBM market. SK Group is also planning a gigawatt-scale AI Factory data center in Japan, targeted for operational readiness between 2028 and 2029.
