Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, said the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin was the main reason the CLARITY Act failed in the US Senate. The digital asset market structure bill lost a procedural vote 49-50 on September 15, 2026, although 60 votes were needed to end debate. Scaramucci claimed that Donald Trump’s launch of a personal token discouraged Democrats who had been willing to support bipartisan regulation and damaged public trust in the industry. Public Citizen estimates investors face $4.7 billion in unrealized losses tied to Trump-linked digital assets, including $3.2 billion associated with the TRUMP memecoin, while Trump reportedly earned $635 million in licensing fees in 2025. The bill has not been abandoned: advocates are negotiating ethics provisions intended to limit conflicts of interest among senior officials, but the voting gap remains substantial ahead of the midterm elections.
